PRÉSENTATION - AXES DE RECHERCHE

La sociologie des réseaux sociaux est au cœur de mes activités de recherche. J’étudie les comportements intentionnels (en particulier, les choix de consommation et de santé) et la construction des identités personnelles sous l’angle des structures des interrelations, qui lient les acteurs et constituent à la fois des opportunités et des contraintes pour l’action. J’adopte une perspective dynamique, mettant l’accent sur l’évolution incessante des structures de liens sous l’effet des choix, des actions et des transformations identitaires des individus.

Une partie importante de ma recherche porte sur les liens tissés sur Internet et leurs implications pour le lien social en général. En langage courant, la locution « réseaux sociaux » est devenue presque synonyme des services de réseautage en ligne, sa généralité passant souvent au second plan ; néanmoins, de nombreux sociologues ont questionné la capacité du Web de renforcer le lien social, allant parfois jusqu’à soutenir qu’il pourrait même produire l’effet inverse. Intéressée par ces débats, je me suis engagée dans des recherches sur la manière dont Internet participe de la dynamique de création, destruction et maintien des relations sociales, et de ses effets sur les comportements et les identités des acteurs. Mes travaux dans ce domaine portent, respectivement, sur les communautés pro-anorexie et pro-boulimie en ligne ; la protection de la vie privée dans les réseaux sociaux sur Internet ; les effets de la censure du Web sur la participation à des mouvements sociaux ; et la mesure de l’influence sociale dans les interactions sur des multiples réseaux en ligne.

Dans d’autres recherches, se situant à mi-chemin entre l’économie et la sociologie, j’applique l’analyse des réseaux sociaux à l’étude d’institutions économiques et de marchés, m'appuyant sur la notion d' encastrement pour prendre en compte l'interaction entre les activités marchandes et le social. Si par ma formation doctorale d’économiste, j'avais mobilisé le choix rationnel sous contrainte comme une perspective d’analyse d’applicabilité universelle, l’analyse des réseaux me permet aujourd'hui d’adopter une optique plus globale, tenant compte des manières multiples dont le lien social organise les actions sociales et économiques. J’ai ainsi participé à une étude du Tribunal de Commerce de Paris, et à une analyse comparée des organisations de microfinance dans les pays en développement.

Je m’intéresse également à la méthodologie des sciences sociales, avec une attention particulière pour les enjeux liés aux données, que je considère comme un soutien essentiel pour une pratique de recherche de qualité. Trois projets européens, dont un actuellement en cours, m’ont amenée à m’occuper de l’utilisation des données de la statistique publique à des finalités scientifiques, tenant compte à la fois des contraintes éthiques et législatives (surtout en termes d’anonymisation et protection des informations sensibles) et du besoin croissant de larges bases de données détaillées pour des analyses de plus en plus fines.
