BMS - AIMS

The BMS is a peer review trimestrial scientific journal
published by the AIMS (International Association of
Sociological Methodology, 45 rue Linne, 75005 Paris), a non
profit organization. The BMS's parity number is 68812. All

The publishers of the BMS are: Philippe Cibois (Universite de
Versailles-Saint Quentin), Karl M. van Meter (LASMAS-CNRS,
Paris), Lise Mounier (LASMAS-CNRS, Caen) and Marie-Ange Schiltz
(CAMS-EHESS, Paris). The director is Karl M. van Meter.

The Scientific Committee of the BMS is composed of Duane F.
Alwin (University of Michigan), Alain Degenne (LASMAS-CNRS,
Caen), Peter Ph. Mohler (ZUMA, Mannheim) and Henry Rouanet
(Universite Paris V).

The BMS publishes twice a year the Newsletter of Research
Committee (RC33) "Logic and Methodology" of the International
Sociological Association. The BMS is abstracted by the three
principal institutions concerned with sociological methodology:
SRM (Sociological Research Methodology) Documentation Centre at
the Erasmus University of Rotterdam; the INIST (Institut de
l'Information Scientifique et Technique) of the CNRS in Nancy;
and Sociological Abstracts in San Diego, California, which
classes the BMS among "core sociology journals".

The BMS publishes in both English and French. The AIMS
reserves all rights to translation, adaptation or reproduction
in any form of all material published by the BMS. The BMS also
maintains an Internet listserv open to its subscribers and a
free Internet mailing list for interested readers.

To submit an article for peer review and possible publication
in the BMS, send either four full hardcopies, or one hardcopy
and one simple ASCII text copy by email or on a diskette. The
article should include title, author, contact information
(post, tel, fax, email, web), a short one-paragraph abstract
with key words, and, at the end of the article, all notes,
references, tables and graphics. Further instructions for
authors available at our web site, or by contacting the BMS.

Le BMS publie en francais et aussi en anglais. L'AIMS se

reproduction de toute matiere publiee dans le BMS. Le BMS gere
sur Internet un listserv ouverte a ces abonnes et une liste de
distribution gratuite ouverte a tout lecteur interesse.

Pour soumettre un article au BMS, envoyez soit quatre
exemplaires sur papier, soit un exemplaire papier et une copie
format texte simple en ASCII sur disquette ou par email.
L'article doit comprendre le titre, l'auteur, ses coordonnees
(poste, tel, fax, email, web), un court resume d'un paragraphe
avec mots-clefs, et, en fin d'article, tous les notes,
references, tableaux et graphiques. Plus d'information est

EDITORIAL



This is a special issue of the BMS devoted to the Fifth
International Conference on Logic and Methodology of the
Research Committee on Logic and Methodology (RC33) of the
International Sociological Association (ISA), and includes Fall
2000 issue of the RC33 Newsletter with a report from the RC33
President, the RC33 Secretary, the RC33 Coordinator for
Information, and the RC33 2000 Conference Organizer. The
Newsletter is followed, in order, by abstracts of the two
keynote speakers, Don A. Dillman (Washington State University)
and Willem J. Heiser (Leiden University), and the session
summaries prepared for this issue by the session organizers.

In the case of the session, "Sensitive Topics, Sensitive
Questions", we publish organizer Karl M. van Meter's full
overview article of the topic, plus his session summary.
Readers should remember that these articles neither replace nor
reproduce the full articles, detailed abstracts, and contact
information available in Social Science Methodology in the New
Millennium - Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference
on Logic and Methodology which is both a hard-copy conference
program and a CD-ROM (isbn 90 801073 8 7) distributed at the
meeting in Cologne, Germany, on 3-6 October 2000 and graciously
hosted by the Zentralarchiv fuer Empirische Sozialforschung
<http://www.za.uni-koeln.de>. The CD-ROM contains the contact
information and those full articles that were ready at the time
of publication. The program has the detailed meeting schedule
and the abstracts, but neither the contact information nor the
full articles.

This material replaces the usual BMS research articles section,
the ongoing research articles section and the "Centre" section,
usually devoted to the RC33 Newsletter in our fall issue. As
usual, you will find the other traditional information sections
of the BMS including book reviews and meeting information.

EDITORIAL



Ce numero special du BMS est consacre a la Cinquieme Conference
Internationale de Logique et de Methodologie du Comite de
recherche Logique et Methodologie (RC33) de l'Association
Internationale de Sociologie (AIS). Il comprend le numero
d'automne 2000 de la RC33 Newsletter avec un rapport du
president, du secretaire, du coordinateur d'information et de
l'organisateur de la Conference RC33 2000. La Newsletter est
suivie, dans l'ordre, par les resumes des deux conferenciers
invites, Don A. Dillman (Washington State University) et Willem
J. Heiser (Universite de Leiden), et par les syntheses de
sessions ecrites pour ce numero par les responsables des
sessions.

Dans le cas de la session, "Themes sensibles, Questions
sensibles", nous publions l'article de synthese de

Resume. Themes sensibles - Questions sensibles: Synthese de la
litterature de recherche. Tous les modes d'enquete de recherche
par questionnaire -- face a face, papier et crayon, par
telephone, par ordinateur -- sont confrontes avec des problemes
associes avec le questionnement concernant des themes
sensibles. Pour fournir une synthese et une structure possible
de la recherche sur des themes sensibles et des questions
sensibles, nous analysons toutes les entrees dans les bases de
donnees de Social Research Methods (SRM) et de Sociological
Abstracts pour ces sujets. Themes sensibles, Questions
sensibles, Social Research Methods Data Base, Sociological
Abstracts, Litterature de recherche.

Abstract: Survey research by questionnaire in any form --
fact-to-face, pencil-and-paper, by telephone, by computer -- is
confronted by problems associated with asking questions about
sensitive topics. To provide an overview and a possible
structure for "sensitive topics" and "sensitive questions"
research, we analyze the contents of the Social Research
Methods (SRM) and the Sociological Abstracts data bases for
these terms. Sensitive Topics, Sensitive Questions, Social
Research Methods Data Base, Sociological Abstracts, Research
Literature.
